Development Project for Engineering Machinery Contour Scanning Tools

Our project aims to provide an industrial cost-effective implementation of a handheld 3D scanner that could be applied to outdoors large-scale machinery and provide users with real-time visualization results. In this report, we develop the engineering specifications based on the customer requirements sponsor (BuilderX) and generate design concepts for the product via morphological analysis. Based on our criterion for evaluating design concepts, we propose a LiDAR-camera-based SLAM algorithm as our selected design concept. We also provide important implementation details for our prototype, which are supported by corresponding engineering analysis. Manufacturing guidance is also included for reproducing the product from our design. Future validation plans are proposed and potential problems are discussed. Given the fact that the prototype has been implemented, the main focus for the next phase of the project would be improving the performance of the prototype by validating its performance and fine-tuning the parameters of the SLAM algorithm.
